THURMONT,
Md. – While the Thurmont Police are maintaining their
presence on the town’s streets, their officers are effectively
down to two-thirds of what they should be with no relief in
sight until next year.
“The
vacancies and openings have taxed the current staff, but Chief
(Greg) Eyler believes the temporary short staffing issue can
be solved,” said Police Commissioner Chairman Tom
Iaccarino.
Until
recently, the police force had one officer out on medical
leave, two on light duty and two vacancies. One of the officers
on light duty has come back to regular duty, which leaves
the eight officers to cover duties budgeted for 12 officers.

Three
families sue town for
$6 million over sewer backups
THURMONT, Md. – Three Thurmont families have filed a $6-million
lawsuit because of sewer back-ups that occurred in their homes
in September 2004.
Deborah
and Robert Massett, Ron and Kathy Bishop and Harold and Paula
Furr filed the lawsuit on Sept. 27, three years after they
claim sewer back-ups flooded their homes. “The flooding
and sewage was caused by the Town of Thurmont’s failure
properly to design, construct and/or maintain the Town of
Thurmont’s storm water and sewage systems,” according
to the lawsuit.
The
lawsuit, in essence, makes the same claims as another lawsuit

Stroll to feature new Pearl paintings
THURMONT, Md. – Rebecca Pearl has been busy this past
week. Fighting off the remnants of pneumonia, she’s been
painting a new Thurmont scene to debut at Friday’s Gallery
Stroll.
“I’m
working on a painting of Roddy Road Bridge with a Christmas
feel to it,” Pearl said.
She
