Day
gets
two tails up

Thurmont’s
first Furmont Day was held at
the Guardian Hose Company carnival
grounds on Saturday, June 2. Daisy

during the event.
THURMONT,
Md. – If the number of wagging
tails were any indication, it was
clear at the first Furmont Day that
both man and his best friend were
having a great time.
Forty dogs and
their owners braved the heat and
showed up at the event to compete
in various events. Awards were
handed out for the smallest dog,
largest dog, waggiest tail, singingest
dog, best costume, favorite pet
photo and winner of the doggy
musical chairs.

Thurmont families awarded
$3.5 million in sewage case...for now

as town plans its appeal

THURMONT, Md. – A jury
in the Frederick County Circuit Court awarded
seven Thurmont families nearly $3.5 million
for damages resulting from a sewer backup occurring
in their homes in 2003.
“They were thrilled,” said John
E. Coppock Jr., one of the families’
lawyers. “They’re happy it’s
over.”
The families involved in the suit were granted
awards ranging from $317,101 to $699,733 for
economic damages, property loss and pain and
suffering. Coppock said that he was not surprised
by the outcome of the trial and thought the
award was fair and “right in line with

Thurmont remembers its veterans,
unveils new monument
THURMONT,
Md. – A year after Lt. Robert Seidel, III was
buried, his parents were part of the special Memorial
Day Services in Thurmont’s Memorial Park to honor
area veterans and unveil a new memorial in the park.
The memorial service was held on May 30. The flags at
Memorial Park flew at half mast and the Thurmont Middle
School Band played patriotic tunes. The weather was
pleasant for the event as hundreds of people sat in
the shade of the huge trees that had been planted to
remember fallen veterans from past wars as the newest
veterans were remembered.
