» FARMER'S MARKET COVERAGE

THURMONT, Md. – All tomatoes are not the same. In fact, the same can be said of most fruits and vegetables.

If you want the most-nutritious fruits and vegetables, you should check out your local farmers’ markets like the Thurmont Farmers’ Market that opens on July 7.

According to an article in Better Homes and Gardens, “Foods at farmer’s markets—predominantly fruits and vegetables—almost always have more nutrients per calorie and fewer calories per bite, than many of the food products you’ll find on supermarket shelves.”

Sewer lawyer responds to mayor's criticism

THURMONT, Md. – The families who won a $3.5-million award in May against the town of Thurmont because the town’s sewer system backed up into their homes are not responsible for the drastic increases in the town’s water and sewer rates, according to one of the families’ lawyers.

minimal growth last year

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Growth in Emmitsburg and Thurmont last year was six. Not six percent. Six people. This is according to new estimates on municipal populations that the U.S. Census Bureau released on June 28.

According to the numbers, Thurmont’s population last year was 6027, up 5 people from 2005. The average growth since the 2000 census has been 1.3 percent a year.

“I think that’s a little slow personally,” said Thurmont Planning and Zoning Chairman John Kinnaird. He said the commission hasn’t officially taken a position on how fast the town should grow, though 2 percent annually has been discussed more than most options.

Emmitsburg has grown even slower than Thurmont. Last year, its population was 2365, one more person than in 2005. However, » full story
