Thurmont turns back the clock for 50’s/60’s Night

THURMONT, Md. – The carnival grounds in Thurmont will look like a scene from the movie “Grease” on July 28. That’s when the town turns back the clock for its annual 50’s/60’s Night.

“They’ll be a pie eating contest, an old-fashioned cake walk, hula hoops and a moon bounce,” said Thurmont Town Commissioner Wayne Hooper.

The day’s events begin at noon with a classic car show. Then the kids’ contests begin at 3:30 p.m. and continue to the prizes, donated by l¬¬¬ocal businesses, run out. The Catoctin Promise Band will also provide the music in the afternoon.

The Guardian Hose Company will be offering food and the Thurmont Grange will be selling ice cream.

“The original intent was as part of the town’s 250th anniversary. The theme was chosen by the committee to take us back to the 50’s and it was such a success that the decision was made to keep it up each year,” Hooper said.

“We’ll probably use the Local Government Insurance Trust, but that will be more expensive,” said Mayor Martin Burns.

The town had expected to pay $88,875 for its » full story
