Show 50 years old and still going strong

THURMONT, Md. –
Though Thurmont and Emmitsburg have grown over the last 50
years, their roots remain rural. Nothing demonstrates that
better than the continued popularity of the community show,
which celebrated 50 years on Sept. 8-9.
At
the first Thurmont Community Show in 1957, 394 exhibits competed
for $155 in premiums.

Public
responds to proposed town charter
THURMONT, Md. – Thurmont will soon have its first official
mayor in its 255-year history when the town commissioners approve
an updated town charter.
The problem
is whether the mayor will function as a mayor or as president
of the board of town commissioners.
“Mayor”
Martin Burns said the commissioners were the legislative arm
of government and the mayor was the executive.

Flood
of annexation requests expected
THURMONT, Md. – Don’t be surprised if the expected
annexation requests for proposed developments around Thurmont
are presented to the Thurmont town commissioners this month.
“You’re
going to see a rash of annexation requests before October
1 because of a new law,” Mayor Marty Burns said during
a town meeting.
This
new state law, passed by the Maryland General Assembly this
year, will have a visible effect on municipalities beginning
in October. The law requires municipalities to include more
planning elements in their master plans and to consult with
