Practice makes perfect for emergency training

Emergency responders from Emmitsburg and other north county communities, along with Frederick County and Maryland agencies participated in a mock emergency at the intersection of Roddy Road and Roddy Bridge Road on Sunday, Oct. 22. The simulated chemical spill tested how emergency personnel responded to the situation and worked together to handle it.


“Get back! Stay where you are!” firefighters shouted to a victim who walked in a daze towards them. The man had been involved in a fatal accident with a truck carrying hazardous materials. Fortunately, it was only a drill.

On Sunday, Oct. 22, emergency agencies from northern Frederick County and parts of Pennsylvania came together to practice dealing with hazardous materials. Each year the Local Emergency Planning Committee stages a large-scale accident to test the skills of emergency responders. This year the drill took place at the corner of Roddy Road and Roddy Creek Road.

Electricity rates rising again - going up 16%

THURMONT, Md. – Thurmont’s electric rates are going up a little faster and a little more than expected.

The Thurmont Town Commissioners heard an update about their electric rates from Drew Van Dopp with Downes Associates who told them that the town’s electric rates would have to be adjusted sooner than expected and at a greater rate than estimated earlier this year.

Graceham may eventually
be part of Thurmont


THURMONT, Md. – It won’t happen next year. It probably won’t even happen in 10 years, but at some point in the next 50 years, Graceham will be swallowed by Thurmont.

In the process of developing the town’s master plan, the Thurmont Planning and Zoning Commission needs to show the boundary of where the commission expects the town to grow.

The existing municipal growth boundary includes about 267 acres that are outside of Thurmont but within the growth boundary. While that is more than enough land to address the town’s expected growth over the next 20 years, it leaves little room for delays due to owners not » full story
