already saving Thurmont money

as the Town of Thurmont prepares to introduce
mandatory recycling within town limits, residents

THURMONT,
Md. – Disposing of trash in Thurmont costs residents
$371,700 a year or 9 cents of their 27-cent municipal property
tax rate.
Faced with the
growing cost of trash disposal, Thurmont town commissioners
are looking for ways to reduce the amount of trash the town
picks up.
“We have
to do it,” said Commissioner Ron Terpko. “We have
to save the environment and we have to take care of the financial
end of things.”
The Thurmont
Recycling Committee is preparing an ordinance to bring mandatory

New
rates not shocking residents
THURMONT, Md. – Thurmont’s electric bills went out
last month with a 26-percent rate increase. That means customers
using 1000 kilowatt-hours each month will pay $89.72 a month
instead of $71.49.
“The
new rate was part of the bills that went out at the beginning
of the month,” said Thurmont Clerk/Treasurer Rick May.
“So far, we haven’t received many comments about
it.”
Mayor
Martin Burns is also relieved that he hasn’t gotten

Dispatch
writers capture press awards
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Members of The Dispatch staff and two
contributing writers were honored at the MDDC (Maryland-Delaware-District
of Columbia) Press Association awards ceremony held in Annapolis
on April 28.
The Dispatch
entered articles in the editorial competition for the first
time this year, competing in Division F, non-dailies under
10,000 circulation. With approximately 53 newspapers in that
division, The Emmitsburg Dispatch ranked in the top half of
small, non-dailies.
In the
Continuing Coverage category, Emmitsburg News Editor Rick
Fulton, along with contributing writer Chris Patterson, captured
first place honors for the “Emmitsburg Ethics Investigation,”
