in the Thurmont town commissioners as they started
their weight-loss program to raise money for charity.
Commission President Martin Burns is raising money
for the Guardian Hose company building fund; Commissioner
Ronald Terpko for Corporal Adam Kisielewski, a local
soldier who lost and arm and leg in Iraq; Commissioner
William Blakeslee for the local military support group
and the Thurmont Trolley rehabilitation; Commissioner
Glenn Muth for Catoctin High School Safe and Sane;
and Commissioner Wayne Hooper for the Guardian Hose
building fund and playground equipment. Anyone interested

Thurmont
expecting annexation request
THURMONT,
Md. – In the next few months, Thurmont Town Commissioners
President Martin Burns expects to see a request for the town
to annex a piece of property that could eventually have as
many as 300 homes and possibly a Wal-Mart.
Burns told the
planning and zoning commission on Feb. 23 that he had been
told the potential development would include a large box store
and that Lowes, Home Depot, Wal-Mart and Target had shown
interest.

will build Thurmont
Police headquarters
THURMONT,
Md. – Thurmont town commissioners unanimously approved the
police commission’s recommendations for a stand-alone Thurmont
Police station on Feb. 21.
The new
Thurmont Police Station, as envisioned by town officials, will
include three holding cells, a three-car garage, a workout room,
laundry room, offices and storage rooms.

Casino
opponents present
findings to county planners
GETTYSBURG,
Pa. – With an April 5 public hearing date set by the Pennsylvania
Gaming Control Board on the Gettysburg casino proposal, members
of No Casino Gettysburg, an opposition group of local residents
and merchants, presented a casino-related cost-benefit analysis
to the Adams County Planning Commission on Feb. 15.
Much
of the report challenges the Dec. 20, 2005 local impact report
from Chance Enterprises, Inc., the group proposing the Crossroads
Gaming Resort & Spa (formerly the Gettysburg Casino &
Spa), to be located in Straban Township on Route 30 near the
U.S. 15 interchange.
