Bigger, better Business Expo highlights Thurmont

The 2nd annual Thurmont Business Expo on March 31 filled both gyms at Catoctin High School with 95 exhibitors and between 1,400 and 1,600 people. Attendance was up from 650 visitors last year.

THURMONT, Md. – Between 1,400 and 1,600 people attended the second annual Thurmont Business Expo at Catoctin High on Friday, March 31. The three-hour event was created by Thurmont’s Economic Development Commission to highlight the area’s businesses and services.

Thurmont Police lowest paid in region 

THURMONT, Md. – A new police officer with no experience in Brunswick can make $27,664 a year starting out while the same police officer in Thurmont, a town 15 percent larger than Brunswick, makes 5 percent less.

“Our salaries are not competitive with local jurisdictions like Brunswick,” said Thurmont Police Chief Greg Eyler.

The Thurmont Police Commission agrees with Eyler. The commission conducted a study last year among regional police agencies and found that salaries were about 26 percent less in Thurmont at all levels.

Hundreds attend Gettysburg casino hearing

GETTYSBURG, Pa. –- Hundreds of area residents, elected officials and representatives of Crossroads Casino & Spa filled the ballroom of Gettysburg College’s student union building April 5 to participate in or observe the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board’s (PGCB) hearing on the casino proposal.

People on both sides of the issue claimed to represent the majority opinion. PGCB held the hearing in conjunction with Crossroads’ application for an operating license for a gambling facility to be located in Straban Township on Route 30 near the U.S. 15 interchange.
