Will the Myers Farm become part of Thurmont?

Developers of the 235-acre Myers farm are expected to request that the property be annexed into Thurmont in the next few months. When developed, the subdivision could include up to 400 new homes and a commercial component that would include a large box store, such as Wal-Mart, Target, Home Depot or Lowe’s.

THURMONT, Md. – Tossing your soda cans into the trash might soon be a crime in Thurmont.

The Thurmont Town Commissioners are planning to bring mandatory recycling to the town to try to lower rising trash disposal costs.

Crime – and crimes solved – increase 

THURMONT, Md. – Between 2001 and 2005, Thurmont’s population increased about 7 percent, and crime in the town has increased more than 25 percent. However, more than twice as many crimes have been cleared.

In 2001, Thurmont Police handled 125 serious crime cases. Last year that number had risen to 157 cases, according to the Uniform Crime Report.

“Mayor” Martin Burns agrees with the numbers. “I have seen a significant increase in solving crimes in Thurmont, and law enforcement as a whole, over the past 3 to 5 years,” he said.

Residents discuss Myers farm annexation

THURMONT, Md. – Though 300 to 400 new homes in Thurmont would increase the customer base for his jewelry store, John Brown doesn’t want to see the Myers farm annexed into town.

“It would help my business, but I’m more concerned about the town,” Brown said. “I don’t want to see 300 new homes.”

Brown was among the 30 people who attended an April 12 meeting in Thurmont’s town hall to talk about the possible annexation and town growth in general.
