An OH-58D(R) Kiowa Warrior from the 4th Squadron, 3d ACR flies over Tall Afar, Iraq, carrying a U.S. flag for the town of Thurmont.

Helicopter flies flag for Thurmont over Iraqi town

CW5 Edward S. Penick presented a U.S. flag to the Board of Commissioners to thank the Thurmont Military Support for packages sent to troops in Iraq during the 3rd ACR deployment to Operation Iraqi Freedom III.

The U.S. flag was flown for 2 1/2 hours over Tall Afar, Iraq, in an OH-58D(R) Kiowa Warrior belonging to Pegasus Troop, 4th Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment. The Pilot-in-Command for the mission was CW5 Edward S. Penick, HHT, 4/3 ACR and the Pilot was CW2 Robert Lafo, Pegasus Troop, 4/3 ACR.

Some Thurmont residents may get sewer tax break

Low-income Thurmont residents may get a break from the $2.50 per month “flush tax” that supports the state’s Chesapeake and Atlantic Coastal Bays Restoration Fund.

The exemption program is open to municipalities who apply for it and once the mayor and commissioners sign off on the final plan, the paperwork will be forwarded to the state.

Habitat for Humanity
plans new Thurmont home


Ground was broken Oct. 18 on a lot near Thurmont where a family will finally realize their dream of owning a home, thanks to the Habitat for Humanity program.

This site, which is on Blue Mountain Road, was offered to the organization at a reduced price, thanks to a donation by the landowner, said Romey Brooks, public relations director for the Frederick office of Habitat for Humanity.

Meet the new Thurmont Chief of Police

THURMONT, Md. – Major Gregory Eyler, 49, will begin work as the new Thurmont Chief of Police on Dec. 1.

Eyler was born and raised in Thurmont. He has been married to his high school sweetheart, Brenda, for 28 years. They have raised two children, Jeffrey, 24, and Meaghan, 19. Jeffrey is a deputy sheriff with the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office and Meaghan is in her second year of pre-law at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa.
